View From The Top

I shot this photo of Coronado last week from Symphony Tower in downtown San Diego.  It gives you a good idea of how close Coronado is to San Diego.  Point Loma is the finger of land you see in the distant right.  The San Diego Bay looks narrow enough to swim across, doesn't it?

The key to San Diego's charm is that so many of its neighborhoods have retained their original personalities.  Just spend time in North Park, Imperial Beach, Hillcrest, Pacific Beach or Little Italy and see for yourself.

Okay, back to Coronado; in this shot you can see a bit of the Coronado Bridge on the left, then The Shores condominiums - the only tall buildings permitted in Coronado.  If you look closely just to the right of that, you can spot the Hotel Del Coronado between the the matching San Diego high rise buildings.  Orange Avenue, Coronado's main street is between the two shorter silver colored buildings.

Before the bridge was built in 1969, the Coronado Ferry docked at the foot of Orange Avenue.  There is now a lovely green space in that location called Centennial Park, where the original Ferry Ticket Booth sits amidst roses.  Hint: Centennial Park is a wonderful spot for taking photos!

Coronado Ferry Arriving

I shot this photo from the lawn of the Coronado Ferry Landing last night, looking across the bay at San Diego.

You can tell Spring is here because everybody is outside, chatting with friends and neighbors.  Of course we don't really have a proper Winter season here in Coronado, but that doesn't stop us from getting excited when Summer is just around the corner!

Tomorrow is the eagerly awaited opening of the 86th annual Coronado Flower Show at Spreckels Park, so you know I'll be posting lots and lots of flower photos this weekend!

Sunny Sunday

The warm weather has brought everyone outside, residents and tourists alike.

Today I photographed the ferry Cabrillo as it arrived full of passengers ready to explore our island.

I hope we all take time this holiday weekend to explore and discover!

The Old Ferry Landing

The original Coronado ferry landing was located on the intersection of First Street and Orange Avenue.  The ferry transported travellers and their vehicles from 1886 until 1969 when the Coronado Bridge opened.

The old ferry booth was preserved and still stands on this site which is now Centennial Park.

Today we have a convenient and enjoyable ferry reserved for foot traffic just a couple blocks down First Street from the original site.

The Coronado Ferry

The Coronado Ferry runs between San Diego's Broadway Pier and the Coronado Ferry Landing.  It runs every hour, leaving San Diego on the hour, and leaving Coronado on the half hour.  The fare is $3.75 each way, and kids under 3 years old are free.  It's still a relaxing way to commute in and out of Coronado, and harkens back to the days prior to the bridge, when ferries churned the water of the bay transporting passengers and their cars to the old Coronado terminal at Orange Avenue and First Street.

Foggy Morning

It's foggy this morning in Coronado, but the marine layer should burn off soon.  I caught the Cabrillo pulling into dock as I rode my bike through the Ferry Landing earlier today.  For information on taking the ferry across the San Diego Bay, visit http://www.sdhe.com/san-diego-bay-ferry.html.

Old Ferry Ticketbooth

This is the original site of the Coronado Ferryboat Terminal, which operated here from 1886 until 1969, when the bridge was built.  The current ferry landing is two blocks to the right.

Sunday at the Ferry Landing

The Coronado ferry is a scenic and relaxing way to commute to down town San Diego. The fare is $3.75 each way, children under 3 are free, and there is no charge for bikes. Tickets may be purchased at a machine, or directly from the ticket taker if you have exact change.
