A New Tool In The Toolbox?

The San Diego Skyline has been called the "toolbox", because several its buildings look like tools.  Here you can see two screwdriver shaped high-rises, and a phillips head screwdriver shaped building.

Now there is a new building taking shape across the San Diego Bay, and I'm curious if it will have a tool shape, or be an ordinary building.

I'll keep you posted.

P.S.  The Coronado Village Theater reopens tonight, after being boarded up for eleven years.  The newspaper showed a sneak preview of the renovations, and it looks great, keeping many of its historic features.  I'll post some photos in the next few days!

View From The Top

I shot this photo of Coronado last week from Symphony Tower in downtown San Diego.  It gives you a good idea of how close Coronado is to San Diego.  Point Loma is the finger of land you see in the distant right.  The San Diego Bay looks narrow enough to swim across, doesn't it?

The key to San Diego's charm is that so many of its neighborhoods have retained their original personalities.  Just spend time in North Park, Imperial Beach, Hillcrest, Pacific Beach or Little Italy and see for yourself.

Okay, back to Coronado; in this shot you can see a bit of the Coronado Bridge on the left, then The Shores condominiums - the only tall buildings permitted in Coronado.  If you look closely just to the right of that, you can spot the Hotel Del Coronado between the the matching San Diego high rise buildings.  Orange Avenue, Coronado's main street is between the two shorter silver colored buildings.

Before the bridge was built in 1969, the Coronado Ferry docked at the foot of Orange Avenue.  There is now a lovely green space in that location called Centennial Park, where the original Ferry Ticket Booth sits amidst roses.  Hint: Centennial Park is a wonderful spot for taking photos!

View of Coronado Bridge From The San Diego Bay

This was our view of the Coronado Bridge earlier today while sailing on the San Diego Bay.  It was a clear, sunny day with blustery winds that kept boaters on their toes!

Note the San Diego Skyline peeking under the bridge in the distance, with Coronado sitting on the far left.

Coronado Ferry Arriving

I shot this photo from the lawn of the Coronado Ferry Landing last night, looking across the bay at San Diego.

You can tell Spring is here because everybody is outside, chatting with friends and neighbors.  Of course we don't really have a proper Winter season here in Coronado, but that doesn't stop us from getting excited when Summer is just around the corner!

Tomorrow is the eagerly awaited opening of the 86th annual Coronado Flower Show at Spreckels Park, so you know I'll be posting lots and lots of flower photos this weekend!

Coronado Ferry Pier at Sunrise

The other day I woke up early enough to catch the sunrise gleaming off the San Diego Bay.

Doesn't this man look put together, considering it was 7:00 in the morning?

I've been a bit lazy about posting lately... there's no good excuse, other than a mild case of Spring Fever.  Do you get a little dreamy (read lazy) in the Spring?

After the Rain

Photographing San Diego from the shore of Coronado is always rewarding.

The recent rain left the San Diego Skyline clear and polished yesterday.  Makes me want to hop in a sail boat for an afternoon on the bay!

Harbor View Park

It rained here all day Sunday and this morning, so when the sun broke out around lunchtime, I headed down to shoot photos by the bay.

This is Harbor View Park, a tiny little strip of grass that leads to the edge of the San Diego Bay.  It's too small for most activities, but perfect for photographing the San Diego Skyline from Coronado.

Those of you who live in California know that Ice Plant is a hardy plant that thrives in our sunny, dry climate.  I think of it as the Kudzu of the West, but with brilliant colorful flowers.

Beach Tent

I see these ingenious little tents popping up more and more on our beaches.  What a great way to keep the sun and blowing sand off!

This photo was taken on a sunny day last month at the Coronado Ferry Landing, overlooking the San Diego Bay.

Paddle Power

I've been too busy to blog the past couple days, so this morning I hit the roads on bike to look for a typical Coronado scene to share with you.

There were a lot of people on the water today, but I thought this kayaker and paddleboarder made nice pictures.  The weather has become a bit chilly (low 60's), but it's fairly sunny, making it a good Sunday to spend outdoors.

Hope you had a great weekend!

San Diego Bay Paddle Boarder

This paddle boarder caught my eye this morning as I peddled along the bike path in Coronado.

To give you an idea of how fast he was going; I had a hard time keeping up with him on my bicycle!

Now that is an upper body workout!

Have you tried paddle boarding?

Bay View Park At Sunset

This was the scene at Bay View Park at around 5:30 tonight.  I thought I'd soak up the ambiance by myself, but others had the same idea.

A woman ate an ice cream bar (chocolate I think) while watching the light fade to dusk, and a Snowy Egret shuffled along the edge of the bay in search of dinner.

It's hard to tell a Snowy Egret from a Great Heron, but a quick internet search taught me the Snowy Egret is smaller, has golden feet, and shuffles on the edge of the water to churn up his food.  The Great Heron is larger with black feet, stands perfectly still, then strikes quickly when a fish comes along.

Good to know.

Coronado Golf Course

The Coronado Municipal Golf Course has an impressive view of the San Diego Bay as well as the Coronado Bridge.  These golfers are honing their skills on the putting green.

I shot this Sunday morning after breakfast in the Club House.

The best part of this Golf Course?  It's open to the public!

Sunny Sunday

The warm weather has brought everyone outside, residents and tourists alike.

Today I photographed the ferry Cabrillo as it arrived full of passengers ready to explore our island.

I hope we all take time this holiday weekend to explore and discover!

Carnival Splendor Still Docked

The cruise ship Carnival Splendor remains in San Diego, receiving necessary repairs before it can head North under its own power later this month.

I took this photo driving home over the Coronado Bay Bridge from San Diego on January 1st.  You can see Coronado on the other side of the bridge, with Point Loma and the sunset fading into the background.

The Carnival Splendor is surprisingly large, dwarfing  large ships that sail past it into the San Diego Bay.

Click HERE for more information on the Carnival Splendor.

Happy New Year!

Let's bring in the New Year with a view from the top!

This is the fabulous view from the Coronado Bay Bridge... it's really better to be a passenger than the driver when coming over to Coronado, because there's so much to see from up there.

I shot these on Thursday afternoon with my husband Mike at the wheel, so I could snap a few quick photos for you.

The first photo shows the San Diego Bay with Coronado on the left, and San Diego on the right.  The second shot pans over to include the village of Coronado, with the Pacific Ocean and Point Loma in the distance.

Thanks to everyone who visited my blog in its first year!  I wish you the very best for 2011.

Rainy Day At Low Tide

Woke up to the sound of rain this morning, and decided to stroll around looking for photo opportunities.

The tide was quite low when I walked around the bay at Centennial Park, so I hopped down on the sand to see the bay from a different perspective.

In the second photo you can see rainwater run-off flowing into the bay, something we don't see too often.

In the last shot it looks like I could walk across the bay, the tide was so low!  It's interesting to see parts of the island from a new angle, but by the last photo I was soaked and ready to go back inside.

Sunset On The Bay

This is the San Diego Bay, about twenty minutes ago.  Don't you just love the sunset colors this time of year?

Today is my father-in-laws birthday, so Happy Birthday Bill!!

Christmas By The Bay

We may have sand instead of snow at Christmastime in Coronado, but it's beautiful anyway!

This was shot at First and Orange Avenue, with a peek at Centennial Park, the San Diego Bay, and San Diego Skyline in the distance.  The large white building across the bay is the San Diego Convention Center.

Moonlight On The Bay

I shot this last month when the moon was full, softly illuminating the San Diego Bay.  A stroll down the bike path near the Coronado Ferry Landing is romantic and inspiring any time of the day.

Sunrise Over San Diego

I shot this sunrise photograph earlier this month - the palm trees, bay, Coronado bridge and hills of San Diego remind me why I feel so blessed to live here.

Photo was taken at the SDG&E park on First Street in Coronado.
